BANIA is combining sacred songs, traditional Algerian narrations and more personal compositions, to tell us the story of the Sahara and its Inhabitants. Based on the traditional Algerian Gnawa music called “Diwane”, taking its roots in Sub-Saharian Africa to bloom in North-Africa, and enriched by other musical influences, such as Ahelli or Gouaril rhythms, BANIA gives a contemporary vision of the music of this part of our World.
Driven by the powerful and intense voice of Abdelafid ( Hafid) Bidari, BANIA offers us a fresco of innovating experiments, where the rhythmic complexity of the percussions and the goumbri, associated with the energy and passion of the guitars, lead to an inexorable trance..
NO BODY CAN RESIST !
Abdelhafid (Hafid) Bidari was born in Oran in 1970 and took part since his birth to the Diwane ceremonies and rituals of his family.
In 1990 he entered the Theatre of Oran as a musician and ended up driving his own traditional music and dance troupe all over Algeria and Europe until 2003.
In 2008, Hafid joined the legendary Orchestre National de Barbes, recorded two albums and toured the world until 2013 with them.
In 2012, after his encounter with Thierry Fournel and El Hadi El Hassar, he started working on the album “Alwane” (which means colours in Arabic ) of BANIA the band he had created in Paris in 2005.
Each title is a singular exploration of the rhythms of the great Algerian Desert. The drummer Karim Ziad and the bass player Youssef Boukella, leader of the Orchestre National de Barbes (ONB) where invited on this beautiful 13 tracks album.
The album was released in April 2015.
